Finding Housing

3 Easy Steps to Live in Community

At Common, we’ve worked hard to make every aspect of living with others easier. From furniture and utilities, to cleaning and community, to finding and vetting new suitemates, we’re able to remove the hard parts of shared living while letting our members enjoy the good ones.

One aspect of joining Common that we took great care to design is our admissions process. Just like we’ve tried to make shared living easier, we’ve made the process of finding, applying for, and securing housing a better user experience as well.

1. Apply online

The first step is to fill out a quick application on our website. This takes less than five minutes and can be done from any device.

Once we receive your application, someone from our admissions team will give you a call. If you’re applying from abroad, we’ll arrange a time to chat via Skype or FaceTime.

The intro call is our chance to learn more about you and answer any questions you might have. It’s also your chance to tell us why you want to join Common, and what you think you would bring to the community. It’s a great way to get to know each other and determine if there’s a mutual fit.

2. Choose your home

If you’re in the area, we’ll arrange a time to check out one or several of our homes. If you’re applying from outside NYC, you can take a virtual tour of our properties on our website.

One of the best parts of the Common admissions process is our digital onboarding. Securing your membership – everything from selecting your suite and room, to signing your membership and licensing agreements, to setting up payment – can be done electronically, from anywhere in the world.

3. Welcome to Common

Once you’ve completed your membership onboarding, we’ll ask you to submit a background check and provide evidence of ability to pay. We accept bank balance statements, letters of employment, income stubs, 1099s, or any combination of these – we use this information in lieu of a traditional credit check. We’ve taken what’s normally an arduous and process tried to make it simple and user friendly.

With no furniture to move, wifi to set up, or bed to make, we expect this to be your easiest move ever. Sundays are move in days at Common, where a member of our team or your House Leader will be there to greet you and let you know about the Sunday hang that evening, a weekly tradition where you can meet your housemates at a casual potluck or watch Game of Thrones together.
