A Taste of Culture, Language, and, of Course, Wine

Our members are always traveling. In the past three months alone, we’ve seen great recommendations being passed around on Slack for Sydney, Seattle, Tokyo, and beyond. Travel and cultural exploration is hands down one of the activities that connects all 150 Common members across NYC, DC, and SF.

So, how can we recreate the essence of travel from the comfort of Common living rooms? Enter Fluent City, the new modern day culture school.

We’ve teamed up with Fluent City in NYC to bring our members monthly events to feed their thirst for travel and getting outside the English-speaking comfort zone.

For our first Fluent City x Common series, we embarked upon a three-part “Sip & Slang” – a super interactive happy hour with education on both the wine and language sides. We decided to rotate the events on a tour of our NYC neighborhoods: Boerum Hill, Crown Heights, and Williamsburg, and each Sip & Slang event takes members to a new country, with new vino to try and new catch phrases to learn.

First up was our Spanish language class in April, featuring wines from Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. Members from all homes stopped by the Common Baltic lounge and learned all those “just off the plane in Spain” basics:

  • What’s your name?
  • Where are you from?
  • What kind of wine do you like?
  • Would you like to have a glass with me?

On the second leg of the journey in May, members gathered at Common Kingston for some French Bordeaux and a little “je ne sais quois.” Our final stop next month will take members to Common Havemeyer, and to Italy!

We love Fluent City’s approach to learning and community, and can’t wait to explore more ways to travel the globe from the comfort of our Common homes with them. Besides, we’ve heard German is a lot easier when drinking out of “das boot”… just saying!
