We sat down with John to chat about what his favorite parts of DC are, what he does to unwind, and how coliving fits perfectly into his life.

John, our member in DC

What do you do?

I’m an independent consultant specializing in event management and planning, digital communications, and social media marketing. My clients are often government agencies, healthcare organizations, and nonprofits.

What brought you to DC?

I originally moved to DC for a job opportunity. I stayed because I fell in love with city.

What are your favorite parts of living in the city?

I love the openness of the city (no looming skyscrapers), the architecture, the history, the entertainment, the restaurants, and the charming vibrance of it neighborhoods like Shaw, Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and the U Street Corridor.

Where do you go or what do you do to unwind?

If I’m mellow, my favorite pub will have me sitting at the bar. If I’m in a party mood, then my favorite nightclub will see me dancing the night away. If I want to enjoy nature, then you’ll find me horseback riding or touring the Virginia Vineyards. However, nothing beats peacefully laying on my Common provided mattress.

What does comfort at home mean to you?

Comfort at home means a place where the stresses and dramas of day to day life are put to the side, and a sense of warmth, calm, and well-being can be felt.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you?

I would bring a dog for company, a fishing rod to fish, and a tent for shelter.

Why did you decide to live at Common?

Oh, that’s easy. I had the choice of living in a cramped efficiency, but Common offered a full size home, with an outdoor patio, awesome neighborhood, exceptional amenities, great transportation options, security, and it just made good financial sense.

Complete the sentence: Home is ________.

Home is comfort.

What would you tell someone who is interested in coliving but unsure if it’s right for them?

I believe sharing one’s personal experience is a great way of helping others. With that in mind I would have to stress that the best things about co-living are the people you meet and the networking opportunities. I would also have say that co-living really reduced my stress levels. Having cleaning, typical household supplies, and no utility bills to worry about does make life easier.

Where’s your dream vacation destination?

I have a love of ancient civilizations and mythology and would love to do an immersive vacation touring the ancient sites of China.

What’s your favorite thing about your home?

Don’t laugh at me, but I would have to say the beds. OMG, they are so comfortable.
