How to personalize your room

Last Updated on

When you move into a new place, it takes a while to really feel at home. The white walls can feel foreign and intimidating at first, but once you think of them as a canvas, your room will quickly start to shape up. These are just a couple of great ideas to personalize your room. Remember though, this is your room, and you should practice your own artistic freedom to make it completely yours.

Tip 1: Display your collection.

Do you collect pins or coasters? Whatever it is that you have a proud collection of, put it up on your bedroom wall. Get a cork board, organize them however you want, and put them on display. Super simple. Besides, this looks way more personalized than those posters or random wall art you had up in your college dorm room.

Tip 2: Bring a little bit of home.

At some point in time, you’ll feel a little homesick. Prepare for it by packing some memorabilia for the new place. You can leave photo frames of your friends and family around the room, buy a throw of your country or state’s flag, or even put up a map of your home on the wall. Integrating your old home with your new one will bring comfort and speed up the process of settling in.

Tip 3: Plants, plants, plants.

The kind of greenery you have in your room says a lot about who you are and your lifestyle. Find one (or a few) that match your personality and plop it near a window as decor. This not only an easy way to add a pop of color to your room, but it is also a way to create a sort of bond between you and your new home. Not confident in taking care of plants? There’s always faux plants or just read this guide to planting succulents.

Tip 4: Paint it.

Want more of a DIY project? Paint your walls! You can pick your favorite color to cover the entire room or you can pick a simple geometric pattern for an accent wall. Put your creative hat on, pick a theme, and get painting. If you need some inspiration, check out these colorful ideas. Remember, you can always paint over it, so don’t be afraid to mess up.

Tip 5: Add a little twinkle.

Lighting is crucial to the ambiance of the room. Although you could just add a reading lamp to your bedside table, there are so many other lighting options that are more fun and idiosyncratic. Try to find some lights that you relate to. Some ideas include twinkle lights, chili pepper lights, Christmas lights, a neon sign, and more. It’s a nice little detail that will make nights at the new place seem less dull.
