Recently, it seems like everyone and their mothers are moving to the Bay Area. We don’t blame them. San Francisco, as the city of constant change, offers a different experience to anyone who rolls through. If you’re curious to see what The Golden City has in store for you, then pack your bags and get ready to conquer the city with this beginner’s guide to SF.

Always bring an extra layer.

You might be in California, but don’t expect the sun to be out all the time. Weather in San Francisco fluctuates from neighborhood to neighborhood and from one hour to the next. Layer up on the daily, and always have a light jacket or sweater on you. The average temperature sticks to around 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but you can never be too prepared for the windy, chilly, rainy, and foggy weather.

Just keep walking.

Don’t worry about getting your daily 10,000 steps in. You’ll discover the most by walking up and down all the city’s hills. Besides, Parking is an absolute nightmare in San Francisco, so don’t even waste your time with a car. If you need a break from all the walking, then take public transportation. The Muni and BART are well-connected and easy to use. Here’s a beginner’s guide to getting around the city.

Get out of San Francisco.

As much fun as the city life is, there are so many attractions just outside of San Francisco that you should take advantage of. You can visit Sonoma County and Napa County, California’s (and the US’) most famous wine producing regions, for one-of-a-kind tasting experiences. If you crave the outdoors, then you can head to amazing locations such as Mount Tamalpais State Park, Marin Headlands, Redwood Regional Park, and Mount Diablo State Park in East Bay. Of course, you can always stay in San Francisco and spend time outside at the city’s 220+ parks.

You are where you live.

Though San Francisco is a compact city, it hosts neighborhoods that are diverse in character and charm. The Mission, a.k.a. the Mexican-Latin heart of San Francisco, has become the meeting point of artists and hipsters with its colorful murals and hip cafes. South of Market or SoMA gives of major city vibes as it houses big-name startups. Castro District is characterized as the lively and legendary gay capital of the world whereas Pacific Heights is considered the posh area with beautiful boutiques, expensive restaurants, and awesome mansions.
