Celebrating Valentine’s Day with roommates

TwitterPinterestFacebook

Who says you have to spend Valentine’s Day with (and only with) a romantic partner? To us, Valentine’s Day is more about showing appreciation to those who bring you great joy. Roommates and suitemates are there for you year-round, so Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to make them feel special.

Here are a couple of ways you can celebrate a fun Valentine’s Day with your roommates.

Home cook a meal together (or order takeout).

When’s the last time you had a homecooked meal with your roommates at the dining table? If you can’t recall that memory, then take today to fix that. You can choose to make breakfast or dinner, but make it fun, something you wouldn’t cook on a regular basis. Chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast or chicken parm for dinner; whatever it is, spend some extra time to cook up a great meal and enjoy it together.

Have an anti-Valentine’s Day party.

No date, no problem. This romantic holiday is a social construct anyway, so have some fun defying all the rules. Make some cocktails or grab a beer with your roommates after dinner. Blast some angsty music in your living room, and dance through the night. Buy some flowers for the apartment, or treat yourself to a box of chocolates. Light a candle, and enjoy a book in your bed. The options are endless for a night of self-love.

Watch your favorite Valentine’s Day movies.

Binge watch some movies on Netflix. Maybe catch those holiday films — like “The Princess Switch” — you missed during the holiday season. Gather your roommates, pop some corn, grab some drinks, and settle in for a movie marathon. Some great choices are “When Harry Met Sally,” “500 Days of Summer,” “13 Going on 30,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Never Been Kissed,” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” Spend a fun night in with these feel-good movies and your roomies.

Buy each other a small gift.

Take this time of year to let your roommates know how much you really appreciate them, no matter the holiday. Buy them a small gift, whether it’s something for their room or simple chocolates and a note. It will really change your dynamic, and there will be good vibes all around.
