What you can rent in SoMa or The Mission for under $2000/month

Last Updated on

Over the past decade, San Francisco has become notoriously one of the most expensive cities in the United States. A lack of new, attainable housing combined with an increased demand from employees from nearby tech companies, has created a housing market that can be frightening to explore. But despite the cost, San Francisco is still one of the country’s most historically rich and diverse cities, with beautiful architecture, amazing food, and plenty of economic opportunities. If you’re looking to live in San Francisco on a budget, we’re here to help.

Common’s latest San Francisco coliving home, Common City Gardens, offers members a private, fully furnished bedroom in a fully furnished shared suite, with utilities, WiFi, weekly cleanings, and shared goods (like toilet paper and hand soap) starting at just $1,187/month. It’s one of the best deals in the neighborhood, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find other options for a similar budget; you just have to look. Keep reading to discover where (and how!) you can live in SoMa and the nearby Mission district for under $2,000/month.

Studio in The Mission

Rent per month:

$1,600

Neighborhood:

The Mission

This studio apartment in The Mission is a great deal for those looking for a cozy space to call home, close to conveniences and San Francisco’s rich cultural scene. The space is unfurnished, so you will have to spend extra as you settle in, but with a full kitchen and spacious bathroom, this deal is pretty hard to beat.

Micro-Studio in SoMa

Rent per month:

$1,500

Neighborhood:

SoMa
Micro-studio: 150 sq. ft

This micro-studio in SoMa is certainly affordable for the area, but lacks a few key components to a truly awesome apartment. For example, while there is a kitchen with a wet bar, there’s no full-sized fridge, stove, or oven. This might be perfect for you if you don’t consider yourself a top chef, but if you’re dreaming of inviting friends over for dinner parties or exploring making at home sourdough bread, this space isn’t for you.

Furnished studio in The Mission

Rent per month:

$1,495/month

Neighborhood:

The Mission

Another affordable studio in the Mission, this space also comes partially furnished, with a bed, mattress, and TV, and also offers all-inclusive rent, so WiFi and utilities are included. Like the previous listing, this studio doesn’t have a stove, oven, or full-sized fridge, but it does have a microwave. One other catch: the bathroom is shared between other residents on the floor, which may or may not be a dealbreaker.

Fully-furnished studio in Mission Dolores

Rent per month:

$1,900

Neighborhood:

Mission Dolores

This studio is at the top of our budget at $1,900 but has a few additional features that might make it worth the extra spend. For one, it’s fully furnished, and features a lofted bed, couch, T.V, and dining area. There’s also a full-sized kitchen with large windows that bring in plenty of light. Utilities are also included. This is one of the better deals in the area, and will probably go fast!

Common City Gardens

Rent per month:

Starting at $1,187

Neighborhood:

SoMa

If you’re looking for a truly attainable option in SoMa, you need to check out Common City Gardens. Not only is this coliving home fully furnished, fully stocked, and all-inclusive, it also gives you access to all the special perks of being a Common member, like our Connect by Common App and exclusive discounts to local and national brands.
