Ellis Island Immigration Museum
America was built by immigrants, and in the late-1800s through mid-1900s, they first entered America through Ellis Island. Once this site stopped serving as a point of entry, it was transformed into the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. This important institution provides background about what it was like to enter America through Ellis Island. It allows visitors to experience what many of our ancestors went through during this time. Although the museum’s address is based in New York City, Ellis Island is technically a part of New Jersey.
Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal
While we’re on the topic of Ellis Island, many of the immigrants who came through this point of entry hopped on a train at the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. This was one of the busiest train stations in the area until it shut down in 1967. Now, it’s part of Liberty State Park, and it has been restored as a historical site. This tourist attraction i is also a great place to catch a ride to see the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island.
Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial
While you’re near the Central Railroad of New Jersey Light Rail Terminal, you should stop by the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial. This memorial exists to honor the 749 people from New Jersey who lost their lives during the attacks on September 11th. As you walk down the boardwalk formed by two tall silver walls, you can see all their names. The end of the path leads to where the World Trade Center buildings once stood on the other side of the Hudson River.

While this event had to be canceled due to COVID in 2020, the city plans to bring it back in 2021.
