How to survive a winter in Chicago: tips from our team

TwitterPinterestFacebook

Chicago is known for many things — one of them being frigid winters. With temperatures reaching below zero, December to March in Chicago can be tough, so we asked our Leasing Specialists based in Chicago to give us their tips for thriving during a Chi-Town winter.

The right wardrobe

In any city where temperatures drop drastically during the winter, it’s important to wear layers, especially when you know you’ll be outside for a while. “Don’t underestimate the power of a warm & windproof winter coat — Chicago can also be a slippery slope so always wear boots when you see snow outside.”

Zackery told us whether it’s raining or snowing, leaving the house with a water-resistant bag is crucial. If it’s waterproof you don’t have to worry about the snow melting and getting your things wet. “During the cold months, never leave home without a set of gloves, hat, and scarf, too! Chicago weather can be sneaky in the winter and can change at any moment.”

Get out and explore

When you’re living in a city that has so much to offer, you should be able to explore year-round. Anita, another Leasing Specialist in Chicago, said it’s important to get outside. “Christkindlmart is an outdoor German-style holiday market and it’s super cute. This spot is great for browsing holiday trinkets while sipping hot cocoa.” Another personal favorite is grabbing a tiki drink at either Lost Lake or Three Dots and a Dash! The tiki drinks make you feel like you’re on vacation (and there’s nothing like a tropical escape in the middle of winter!)

The Garfield Park & Lincoln Park Conservatories are also warm places to visit. The Garfield Park Conservatory is a 184-acre park with a swimming pool, fishing lagoon, athletic fields, and a botanical garden. It’s the largest botanical conservatory in the world, plus it’s free! Lincoln Park Conservatory is right near the shore of Lake Michigan and showcases beautiful and exotic flowers.
