How to stay warm and have fun during a cold Chicago winter

Chicago, Illinois, is known for many things. It’s one of the country’s top tourist destinations (just behind New York, hence Chicago’s nickname, “the Second City”) and also home to some truly breathtaking architecture, with skyscrapers that paved the way for the modern metropolis. The Second City isn’t Chicago’s only nickname, however, as winters in “The Windy City” are exactly that.

Winter’s cold doesn’t change the fact that there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Chicago, and much of that fun doesn’t even require you to leave the warmth of the great indoors! Our Chicago homes, Common Briar and Common Damen are not only equipped with household essentials like soap and toiletries (one less trip to the grocery store!) but are also home to a host of safe, shared spaces where resident events are held. Here are a few of our favorite ways to stay warm — and have fun — during a cold Chicago winter.

Get artsy

The Art Institute of Chicago, one of the world’s great art museums, is temporarily closed, but their entire collection is available on their website through a variety of immersive virtual tours. While the full experience of visiting the museum is an ideal reprieve from the cold weather, living at one of our Chicago homes means you’ll have many opportunities to do so. In the meantime, curl up with a homemade hot chocolate — or order one from local favorite Katherine Anne Confections and enjoy all that the AIC has to offer from the comfort of your couch.

Fun begins at home

In addition to cozy fully-furnished spaces, convenient on-site laundry, and some of the most attainable rents found in Chicago, the co-living spaces at Common Briar and Common McCormick are sure to make for some memorable–and safe–wintertime hangouts. Our regular virtual community events allow you to meet and interact with other Common members, and get to know your suite-mates better. Making friends for life without leaving the warmth of home? While there’s plenty of fun to be had from the comfort of Common Briar and Common McCormick, sometimes you need to get out. Fortunately, many of Chicago’s rooftops have adapted to the cold and offer prime views of the city without forcing you to freeze. LondonHouse is the place to go if you need to #TreatYoSelf as their heated rooftop offers first-rate views of the Second City. Further, LondonHouse continues to take all the necessary precautions to ensure that your experience is safe, so you can enjoy a guilt-free night out. Curl up with one of their warm winter drinks and enjoy the next-level views, and when the night is over both Common Briar and Common McCormick are only a short car-ride away.
