Hi Josh! What does a typical day as a Maintenance Technician look like?
A “normal day” at Common as a Maintenance Technician is like describing a typical day in the Twilight Zone. No two days are ever the same, and you never know what to expect! I create a routine by starting every day with a hot cup of coffee and my tablet to make sure I am up to date with all tickets and outstanding issues. Then, I check my calendar for upcoming meetings with the team and other appointments. I spend the rest of my days working on anything from checking the gas lines to ensuring the Amazon deliveries are delivered without a glitch.
It sounds like you’re never bored at work! What was your first week in this role like?
My first week at Common was a whirlwind! I met coworkers, not just in my region in Seattle the complete Property Services team through our weekly meetings. To be honest, I felt overwhelmed and a bit intimidated. On my second day, I shadowed a coworker, and he kept reminding me to focus on one task at a time and ask questions. He allowed me the time to let a large amount of knowledge seep into my brain. By the time my first week had finished, I had a great rundown of the 9 buildings in the Seattle market.
What’s your favorite part of being a part of the Common team?
“I love that I get to help people every day! Sometimes I’m the guy changing a lightbulb and sometimes I’m the guy plunging a toilet. Either way, someone is very grateful for my help and that is the best feeling.”
As a Maintenance Technician, I get to assist our members when they’re having some of the worst days of their lives. When a problem is resolved and everything is back in order, it’s great to know I made a positive difference in their lives. It allows me to make a connection with people I would have never met, and it also helps to earn the trust of the members once I have fixed the most recent tragedy in their apartment. At the end of the day, I enjoy my job because you never know what to expect and with the support I have from my team, it feels like there’s nothing we can’t get accomplished.

Favorite hobby?
Crocheting is definitely a hobby that I enjoy the most. I taught myself about 4 years ago and now make blankets, stuffed animals, hats, dog toys, and more! I also enjoy just being in nature by hiking, walking my dog, kayaking, and playing Pokémon Go.
What do you love about Seattle?
I love the weather! I grew up in Northwest Iowa and by this time in the year, everything is frozen. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the weather is beautiful all the time. Of course, it rains, but you’ll never see the whole city coated in inches of ice.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A chef! I’ve always been a natural-born caretaker, so I was drawn to the idea of improving other people’s days with something I made.
Favorite place?
My family farm in Northwest Iowa. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of farmland and gravel roads, it’s truly paradise.
