5 can’t-miss events in Long Island City

TwitterPinterestFacebook

One of the biggest perks of living in New York City is that there’s seemingly always something going on, and one of NYC’s fastest-growing neighborhoods — Long Island City — is no different. From mass to niche, music festivals to breathwork seminars, there’s an event for everyone this fall in LIC.

Members at our Long Island City home, ALTA by Common, have the neighborhood’s never-ending supply of events at their fingertips, in addition to amenities like a pool, a beautiful furnished rooftop space, and a starting rate of $1,583 — 20% below the cost of nearby studios. Common members also have exclusive access to fun and interesting community events which can’t be found elsewhere in Long Island City (but we’ll get to that shortly.) Here are some upcoming can’t miss events in LIC.

Have a laugh

Celebrating six years of NYC comedy performances, the Smash Comedy Show Revolution is paying a visit to Long Island City’s The Local on Saturday, September 18th. SCSR is billed as one of the most POC-diverse shows in NYC, and the event lineup features writers and talent from HBO, Netflix, BET, and Comedy Central. Tickets are free with no drink-minimum and proof of vaccination is required for attendance. After the show, it’s only a 15-minute walk back to Common.

Break a sweat to Broadway

Love working out but looking for something different? Love show tunes enough to break a sweat dancing to them? Either way, H2shO on the Waterfront is an event like no other. September 13th, 20th, and 27th, the event aims to commemorate live theatre’s return to Broadway following an 18-month hiatus by putting a spin on conventional strength and endurance training. Tickets are free but very limited (so act fast if this is calling out to you!) and all levels and abilities are welcome. The show requires participants to bring towels or bandanas, as well as jazz hands (duh!)

Catch a flick

Movie buffs rejoice, it’s not too late to attend one of CinemaLIC’s free outdoor screenings! The final film in this year’s triumvirate is the seasonally-appropriate classic Jaws, with a screening at the Long Island City Waterfront on September 12th. The film will be projected onto a 30-foot inflatable screen just after sunset, and the screening is free to the public. Bring a blanket to spread out on, pop some popcorn, and enjoy the film!

Set a new personal best

Whether you’re a novice runner looking to challenge yourself, a seasoned athlete eyeing a PB, or somewhere in between, the LIC Waterfront 5K sponsored by Hunters Point Parks Conservancy is an excellent venue to see what you’re made of. The race is rain or shine the morning of September 18th, and entrants have the choice of making a small donation to the Conservancy or paying the full $30 entry fee, which includes a race bib and t-shirt. The 5K is a run/walk, so regardless of whether you’re sprinting all-out or sauntering to the end, having fun is the real prize. See you at the finish line!

Find your rhythm at ALTA by Common

Put on your dancing shoes and find your rhythm, because our favorite upcoming event is the rooftop Salsa & Bachata class September 23rd at ALTA by Common. The class is for all skill levels, so if you’re rhythmically challenged (like your dear writer,) fear not. All ages are invited to groove, and no equipment or dance partners are required to have a good time. Learn a new skill, break a sweat, and enjoy stunning views of Long Island City.

These events hardly scratch the surface of all that there is to do in Long Island City this fall, but the best way to make sure you don’t miss a thing is by becoming a member at ALTA by Common.
