Our values

At Common we subscribe to a set of beliefs that help guide how we work, play, and problem solve together. If these resonate for you, there might be a role with your name on it.

Make the case, take the risk

At Common, we embrace smart risks. A smart risk can be rationally defended to yourself and your peers, ideally with data. We encourage people at every level in the organization to take smart, measured risks.

Bring Data to the Conversation

Data drives a lot of decisions we make and how we operate, so bring data to the conversation whenever possible to ensure we arrive at the right conclusion.

Default to transparency

Authenticity, honesty, and transparency are essential to maintaining our culture of trust. We should all strive to be clear in communication and avoid making assumptions. Adopting this mindset also fosters better feedback and communication.

Embrace change

Changes may be small or large-scale, affect just one department or the whole company. As we scale, adapting to new conditions and embracing change is essential.

Start with yes

Approach new challenges, questions, requests with an open mindset. Instead of shutting down an idea right away, start with a mindset of "we should be able to figure this out."

Growth & Development

At Common, we’re dedicated to fostering a culture of growth and development. We provide all of our employees with the necessary resources, from professional development workshops to team-specific learning opportunities, to both succeed in their current roles and grow within the company.

This culture is reflected in Common’s record of fast internal promotion tracks as well as lateral cross-functional moves; we have a high rate of internal mobility within the organization. The wide range of skill sets among our team members creates an environment that encourages cross-team work and education. From our Housekeeping to Real Estate Teams, the career possibilities at Common are endless.

Megan Hershman

Associate Director, Interiors

What does a typical day at Common look like for you?

It really varies, which is SO refreshing. On a typical day, you can find me working closely with my interiors team, discussing, planning, and envisioning the look and feel for all our flagship Common homes. Everything we design, from our kitchens to our furniture, is all uniquely tailored to coliving which is unbelievably exciting.

What is your favorite part about being in your role?

The people that work at Common are some of the best I have met in my professional career. For me, collaborating with bright, talented, people who are committed to designing, opening, and operating homes that are not only beautiful but are also affordable is what I love about working here.

What does a typical day at Common look like for you?

I'm so lucky because as the Communications Manager for Common, my work touches almost every single different department in the company! On a daily basis, I'm trying to get every bit of newsworthy information out of each group, taking it all in like a sponge, and figuring out how to tell that story in the media. This may mean chatting with our Experience team about a new event we're throwing in Seattle, getting coffee with a Real Estate Director to learn all the details of our newest home opening in Brooklyn, or meeting with our CEO Brad to hear his take on the latest coliving news. Getting breakfast with reporters is a regular occurrence and definitely necessary to build relationships. You can usually find me slacking everyone on the marketing team their horoscope. Oh! And I get to travel. That's super fun.

If you could live in any Common home, in any city, which one would you choose? Why?

I would live in Common Melrose. Have you seen that roofdeck? I would be tan and happy all the time. My second choice would be Common Summit in Seattle. I got the chance to go to Seattle for the first time while opening our first home there, and I absolutely fell in love with the city. I had the best coffee and ate doughnuts all day. It was great.

What do you think makes Common's culture unique compared to other companies you’ve worked for?

Common offers great benefits and perks but I think what makes the culture at Common unique is its focus on its employees and environment. Common puts its trust into their employees by encouraging feedback, smart risk taking and collaboration. The company operates on these values which allows us employees to directly impact the growth and success of the company. The culture at Common can be felt as soon as you walk into the office, the space is open with everyone working alongside each other, including Brad, our CEO. There is also an ample amount of meeting rooms, the kitchen is stocked, and there are always events set on the calendar.

What has been your favorite day working at Common? What made it so special?

My favorite day at Common was my first Tuesday. Every Tuesday we have a team lunch that everyone within the company attends where our CEO and other people on our management team share everything from new employees, metrics, updates and goals. In that team lunch I was not only able to meet the entire team but I also got a first hand glimpse of where we were as a company and where we were planning to go. From that day on I knew that I had made the right decision to be a part of the growth at Common.
