How to spend the day on any budget in Chicago’s Downtown Loop

Chicago’s Downtown Loop, the heart of the action in the Windy City, is one of the country’s most interesting neighborhoods. From the breathtaking architecture, to the near endless supply of great restaurants, there’s something in the Loop for just about anyone.

Our new Chicago home, LINEA by Common, boasts studios, one, and two-bedroom apartments, and enables members to take advantage of all that the Loop has to offer. Starting at $1,910/month with included amenities like a furnished rooftop, onsite laundry, and a state-of-the-art gym, LINEA is one of the most comfortable ways to live in the Loop. And with rates more attainable than many other options in the neighborhood accompanied by a long list of amenities, LINEA is also one of Downtown Loop’s best deals.

For the budget conscious, spending a day in the Loop may seem daunting. But an ideal day in this charming neighborhood doesn’t have to break the bank! No matter what budget you’re operating on, here’s how to spend a perfect day in Downtown Loop.

Laying low

Living large in Downtown Loop doesn’t mean you have to spend big. Start your morning with an invigorating dip in LINEA by Common’s pool and gather your thoughts for the day. After you towel off, swing by Big Shoulders Coffee (just around the corner from Common) for a mid-morning pick-me-up. Black coffee fans and those with a sweet tooth alike will feel at home at Big Shoulders, as their cold brew is every bit as delicious as their Chicago-famous marshmallow lattes. Once you’re amped up, take in the sights via a stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk, and stop off at North Loop Market for some home-cooking ingredients (and maybe grab a sandwich from their deli.) Back home at home you can wind down the day atop LINEA by Common’s furnished rooftop, in the comfort of your private apartment, or shooting pool with new friends.

A little splurge

We all need to treat ourselves every once in a while! Sleep in, or start your morning with a vigorous workout in LINEA by Common’s gym, then mosey on over to Beatnik on the River: one of our favorite brunch spots in all of Chicago. Try their burrata and avocado toast, and be sure to grab one of their to-die-for strawberry danishes for the road (or for a friend if you’re in a giving mood.) After brunch, head to America’s second largest art museum, Art Institute of Chicago, for your culture fix. A spirited walk takes you right past Cloud Gate, and once you’re inside AIC you can live out all of your Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-dreams by pensively perusing their massive art collection. Before heading back to Common, be sure to pick up a pie from Pat’s Pizza. While not deep-dish, it may actually be the best pizza in Chicago. Just don’t tell too many people!

Go all out

If you’re really feeling like splurging, Downtown Loop is a great place to do it. Grab your morning coffee from the caffeine scientists at Intelligentsia, and snag one of their biscottis while you’re at it. Downtown Loop has a handful of high-profile stores like Uniqlo, and deal-hunters will be glad to know the neighborhood is also home to a Nordstrom Rack. For the true shopaholics, or just those in need of some serious retail therapy, skip on over to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Just a six-minute drive from LINEA by Common or a 20-minute walk, this aptly-named stretch of Michigan Avenue is Chicago’s Fashion District. Nike, Zara, Celine, and Tiffany and Co. all have outposts along Magnificent Mile, and whether you’re window shopping or shopping ‘til you drop, this is the place to do it. If hunger strikes on your way back to Common, make a stop at James Beard award-winning The Purple Pig for dinner. Their food is as tasty as their wine menu is extensive, and we have a feeling this might become your new go-to celebratory dinner–or just-because–spot.

There are good times to be had by all in Chicago’s Downtown Loop neighborhood — no matter your budget. And while we’ve outlined some of our favorites, we’ve barely scratched the surface of all there is to do in this unique neighborhood. Living at LINEA by Common grants you access to everything Downtown Loop has to offer, and inclusive, attainable rates mean members get to enjoy more of the Loop.
